Experts from Central Macedonia exchanged experience on emergency situations under the Co-Prevent project in Istanbul

Starting on the 2nd of October 2023 and for 3 days, the Regional Forestry Directorate Istanbul organized a joint training for civil protection and emergency response experts under the Co-Prevent Project. More than 30 representatives from Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece and Moldova participated in exercise activities in Istanbul. The five Greek representatives, selected by ANATOLIKI SA, were members of the Hellenic Fire Service, the Independent Civil Protection Department of Delta Municipality and the Civil Protection Directorate of the Decentralised Administration of Macedonia-Thrace.

The first event was hosted in the Disaster Coordination Center Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, where the experts exchanged information on good practises and their activities during major disasters in the past year. The partners expressed the urged need and willingness of the four countries to cooperate in situations of cross border disasters, for which they need to establish joint protocols for quick reaction. The event continued with visit to the Disaster Simulation Center in Istanbul, where the hosts presented how the local fire fighters are trained in special equipment simulators and civilians can learn the basic reaction in cases of house fire and other common hazards.

Firefighters from the partners’ organizations joined in teams for the exercises in the campus of the Fire Training Center in Resneli. They were able to take a close look at the equipment and practises of the Turkish firefighters as well as train in international environment in simulations of real live situations.

The work panels were chaired by the Deputy Director of the Regional Forestry Directorate Istanbul, Erdal Şahan, and Project Coordinator and OGM firefighting unit director, İkram Çelik.

The activities are part of the framework within the project “Cooperation for Disaster Prevention and Environmental Monitoring in the Black Sea Basin”, BSB 802, co-financed under the second call of the Joint Operational Programme Black Sea Basin 2014-2020 by the European Union through the European Neighbourhood Instrument and by the participating countries: Armenia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine.
